Professional Development Programs

Professional Development Programs are free of charge to employees.  The Learning and Development team partners with the University of Utah Professional Education program and other contract facilitators to bring a variety of expertise to your learning experience.  Applications are required for these programs including supervisor approval.  If you have questions reach out to the Learning and Development Team.

Salt Lake County Professional Development Programs

Program Overview

To provide career development opportunities, Salt Lake County offers employees who have never had a direct supervisory role participate in a Supervisor Credit Program. There is required coursework and a project involving predefined hands-on work experience for the employee. Through this program, employees will earn one full year of supervisory experience upon successful completion.

This is not the Supervisory Certificate Program. The coursework is the same, but employees must complete a year-long project designed by the agency and approved by Human Resources.

Program Requirements

Course Work:

  • Supervisor Credit Program Orientation
  • Project Proposal Workshop
  • Supervisor Boot Camp (6 – Modules)
  • Four 4-hour Elective courses
  • Interactive Session (6-HR)

Project Requirements

  • Submit Project Proposal
  • Submit Mid-year project update survey.
  • Final Project Presentation
  • Submit Project Completion Survey by Mentor/Supervisor

Important Dates

The 2023 program application period has closed.  Look for applications for the 2024 program February/March of 2024.

Program Overview

The Supervisory Certificate Program is designed for supervisors, managers and those that want to hone their leadership skills in human interaction. Human skills are vital to the success of all leaders.  Applications for this program will be available in February/March of each year.

Curriculum

  • Supervisory Certificate Program Orientation
  • Supervisor Boot Camp (6 modules, 24 hours)
  • Human Skills Training - (16 hours from a pre-approved course list)
  • Interactive Session - (6 hours)

Note 1 - if you have completed the Supervisor Boot Camp or the interactive session in the past 2-years you will not have to retake this course work.

Note 2 - Supervisory Certificate Program participants no longer receive six months of supervisory experience credit for completing the program.  If you are interested in in receiving experience credit please review the Supervisor Credit Program outlined below. 

Program Overview

The Management Certificate Program is designed for existing supervisors and managers who want to hone their conceptual skills in support a higher level of leadership. It is recommended that you have completed the Supervisory Certificate Program or have been in the role of a supervisor/manager for more than one year to participate in this program.

Curriculum

  • Management Certificate Program Orientation
  • Supervisor Boot Camp (6 modules, 24 hours)
  • Conceptual Skills Training - (16 hours from a pre-approved course list)
  • Interactive Session - (6 hours)

Note - if you have completed the Supervisor Boot Camp or the interactive session in the past 2-years you will not have to retake this course work.
