Defensive Driving Course

Welcome to the County Portal to the online course for National Safety Council. This online course replaces the traditional in-person, 4-hour class employees have taken in the past. The course is offered through the National Safety Council and will take between 4 to 4 1/2 hours to complete. The course is delivered via multiple modules that do not all have to be completed in one sitting. Note: This course is *not* tracked by the Employees' University. Departments will be billed $20.00 each time their employees take this course.

The online training is required for all employees who drive county vehicles or are approved for mileage reimbursement. (Countywide Policy 1350-Vehicles-19)

Reporting Accidents

Before beginning this course, we wish to remind you of what to do if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident.

County drivers involved in vehicle accidents must call:

  • Their Supervisor
  • Frontier Adjusters (801) 254-4200 ext 10
  • Local Law Enforcement 911

The employee’s supervisor is to report to the accident scene and with the Crawford and Company investigator shall ensure County Policies and Procedures are followed concerning citations, disabled vehicles, towing, impairment and drug/alcohol testing.

Accidents that meet one or more of the following criteria require the supervisor to take the employee to a contract facility for a drug and alcohol screen:

  • An accident involving major physical injury that requires treatment away from the scene of the accident;
  • Loss of human life;
  • Employee is cited by law enforcement for the accident;
  • There is reasonable suspicion that the employee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Remember: Do not discuss the facts of the accident with anyone at the scene except the County accident investigator and the responding law enforcement officer.
