Are You Missing Your Pet?

We try to photograph every animal, but occasionally we cannot get a photo, such as if an animal is injured or aggressive.

We also maintain a list of all the animals that were picked up deceased.

If you are missing your pet, the only way to guarantee that your pet is not here is to visit the shelter in person as soon as possible!

My Pet was Picked up by Animal Control. How do I Retrieve it?

Animals impounded will be redeemed to a person over 18 who can provide proof of identification and animal ownership. Redemption fees will apply; we accept cash, credit cards, and checks. Please note that we cannot quote fees over the phone. Please bring current, valid photo identification and one or more of the following to prove ownership: 

• Location and date when pet was last seen;
• Age and sex of the animal;
• Current photos of the pet;
• Veterinary records for the pet, including proof of vaccinations and proof of sterilization;
• Microchip information

What Should I Do If My Pet Is Missing?

DON'T EVER ASSUME that your pet was stolen or will come back on its own.

VISIT local animal shelters within 24 hours of losing your pet. 

ASK to check the ISOLATION and QUARANTINE kennels when visiting shelters.  Also ask about any animal that may have been picked up deceased.

POST lost pet cards or flyers on lost and found boards at local shelters, veterinary clinics, and other public bulletin boards when available. Post to Utah Lost and Found Pets on Facebook. Also post on the NextDoor App and Finding Rover. 

LOOK for your pet during the day AND AT NIGHT. 

CALL nearby veterinary offices to see if your pet was brought in as an injured stray.

PLACE lost pet ads in local papers and classified sections of websites under the lost & found columns, such as  KSL and/or Craigslist.

CHECK all the shelters in the area.  Your pet could end up at any one of them.

DON'T GIVE UP!   Often a pet will not arrive in a shelter for weeks and sometimes even months after first becoming lost.

Keep ID tags current and microchip your pet!

What will happen to the stray I found?

The animal shelter is a safe haven for all kinds of lost and abandoned pets. The following is the procedure for an animal entering our shelter.  

• If you found the pet in: Bluffdale, Brighton, Emigration Canyon, Copperton, Holladay, Kearns, Magna, Midvale, Millcreek, Murray, Salt Lake City, White City, or any other Salt Lake County Metro Township please bring the pet to our shelter at 511 W 3900 S, we're open 10 AM - 6 PM, Tuesday - Saturday (closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays.) If you found them in any other area of Salt Lake County look at this list of surrounding shelters for contact information.
• You can also call Dispatch at 801-840-4000. An Animal Control Officer may be able to come get the pet or give your more information. 
• A history is taken from the agent (person bringing in the animal) or from the officer, including where the animal was found. If the animal has any type of identification, an attempt is made immediately to contact the owner.
• The animal information is put into a computerized database.
• An Animal Care Specialist checks for any injuries, signs of illness, etc.

• A digital photograph is taken of the animal and put on our website.
• The animal will wait there for his/her family to hopefully come.
• All animals must complete a stray holding period (five business days) for their owners to claim them.
• If the animal is not claimed by its owner, and is healthy and friendly, he/she will be made available for adoption. Any person over 18 who passes an adoption interview (conducted by shelter staff) may be allowed to adopt the animal, but we adopt on a first-come, first-served basis and animals will NOT be held.
