The mission of the Salt Lake County Library System is to make a positive
difference in the lives of our customers by responsively providing materials, information,
and services at community libraries located throughout the Salt Lake Valley
and/or via the Library's Web site.
In early 1939, the Salt Lake County Library opened in two rooms of the old Midvale School.
Today, the Salt Lake County Library System serves nearly 703,000 residents - approximately 35%
of the State's population. More than 75% of potential patrons hold library cards.
To serve the County's ever growing population, Salt Lake County Library operates 18 libraries
(Bingham Creek, Columbus, Draper, East Millcreek, Herriman, Holladay, Hunter, Kearns, Magna,
Park, Riverton, Sandy, Calvin S. Smith, South Jordan, Ruth Vine Tyler, West Jordan, West Valley
and Whitmore), plus a reading room at Alta.
System wide there are more than two million items available for public use and circulation is more
than 12,200,000 items a year. With more than 245 computers available for public use, residents have
access to a world of knowledge both in person and online.
